Mr. Awberryasked the Minister of Transport what steps he takes to protect seamen employed on vessels engaged in the transport of liquid sulphur; and what has been the result of trials made on the two vessels recently constructed specially for this class of cargo.
§ Mr. MarplesMy Department has examined details of the construction of these two ships in consultation with the owners and with representatives of the Officers' and Seamens' Unions.
I am satisfied that the provisions made for ventilation and gas detection on board give adequate protection for the crew. I understand that the first ship, the 256W " Naess Texas ", has satisfactorily completed two round voyages between the Gulf of Mexico and Rotterdam.
