HC Deb 20 November 1963 vol 684 c108W
Mr. F. Harris

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware of the anxiety felt by British people in newly emergent Commonwealth countries at the prospect of having to give up their present citizenship in order to obtain local citizenship; and whether he will consider introducing legislation to enable such people to recover their citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies on application.

Mr. Brooke

Yes. As soon as opportunity occurs the Government proposes to introduce legislation to enable such people with close connections with this country, who have had to renounce citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies as a condition of acquiring or retaining the citizenship of another Commonwealth country, to regain it without being required to fulfil the normal conditions for registration.
