asked Her Majesty's Government:

How much has been paid in each completed year for the past five years by British Railways to customers, either directly or through any insurance effected by British Railways, in compensation, for goods which have been lost in transit.

I am informed by the British Railways Board that the amounts paid in compensation for goods lost, stolen or pilfered while in transit on the railways in the last five years were as follows:

Claims were paid direct and not through any insurance.
