Mr. Hendry

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average rate burden per head of population; and what is the proportion which this bears to average earnings, in Scotland and in England and Wales, respectively.

The total rate burden per head of population in Scotland in 1962–63 was approximately 7s. 2d. per week, or 2.5 per cent. of the average weekly earnings of adult male manual workers at April, 1962. The corresponding figures for England and Wales were 6s. 10d, per week arid 2.2 per cent.
