HC Deb 27 March 1963 vol 674 cc155-6W
56. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is aware of concern in Aberdeen amongst parents and teachers at his proposal to close the demonstration school of the Educational College there, and in this and other ways to diminish Aberdeen children's opportunities for education; and if he will make a statement on his education policy for Aberdeen.

Mr. Noble

The Governors of Aberdeen College of Education have decided that when they replace the present college by a new and much larger building elsewhere they should not replace the demonstration school, which they do not consider to be essential to the work of the college.

The Committee of Parents which has made representations to me against this decision, which I have approved, recognises that the education of the children now attending the school will not be adversely affected. Other children who might have attended the school can be accommodated without difficulty in schools managed by the education authority whose responsibility it is to provide for the education of Aberdeen children generally. The authority has also promised its ready co-operation in providing teaching practice in its schools and in educational experiment and research
