Commander Purseyasked the President of the Board of Trade (1) how many firms in the last year have inquired about building or renting new factories in Hull, respectively; how many his Department has encouraged, and to how many permission has been refused; what has been the result; and what is the policy of his Department on the future building of new factories in Hull;
(2) how many new factories have been opened in Hull during each of the years 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, and 1963, respectively; how many employees, male and female, respectively, have been engaged; and what steps his Department is taking further to reduce unemployment in Hull.
§ Mr. ErrollIn the twelve months ended June, 1963, 17 applications for industrial development certificates were approved for the Hull and Hessle Employment Exchange areas; no applications were refused. For the individual 211W years 1959 to 1963 the numbers of schemes completed in the Hull/Hessle Employment Exchange areas were 13, 21, 21, 16 and 7; the schemes were estimated to employ 97, 417, 390, 426 and 207 men and 37, 107, 170, 383 and 19 women respectively.
On the future building of new factories in Hull, my first responsibility is to encourage industry to set up new projects in the development districts but I should be prepared to consider for Hull projects which could not reasonably go to one of these areas.
