HC Deb 16 July 1963 vol 681 c35W
74. Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Secretary for Technical Co-operation when the post of an officer to advise on co operative societies in Bechuanaland was originally advertised; whether it has now been filled; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Carr

A request was received in June, 1962, to recruit a Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Bechuanaland, who had African experience. The post was not advertised because two suitable qualified candidates were available. One of them was selected but withdrew the day before he was due to fly to Bechuanaland in January, 1963. The second candidate meanwhile had decided to return to East Africa.

It was then suggested that since African experience was required the post should be filled by the temporary secondment of a co-operative officer serving in Basutoland, or by the transfer of an Administrative Service officer serving locally and this is still being pursued.
