HC Deb 25 October 1962 vol 664 cc191-2W
Mr. Boyden

asked the Minister of Education what recommendations of the Annan Committee on the Teaching of Russian, relevant to his Department's responsibilities, are in process of implementation.

Sir E. Boyle

The Government have accepted the Committee's main conclusion that more Russian should be taught in schools and technical colleges and its more detailed recommendations are being examined in the context of the teaching of modern languages generally. A pilot one-year course for 20 serving teachers who intend to teach Russian started in London this term. Next year a similar course will be started in Liverpool and the size of the London course will, I hope, be doubled. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland is exploring the possibility of establishing a pilot course for teachers in Scotland.
