HC Deb 19 November 1962 vol 667 cc102-3W
Captain Kerby

asked the Lord Privy Seal what information he has received from the Acting Secretary-General of the United Nations about the economic recovery of Congo provinces other than Katanga, the amount of taxes and levies paid by those provinces to the Central Government, and the number of Ministers in Mr. Adoula's Government; and what is the official United Nations estimate of the time needed for the Congo to become economically self-sufficient.

Mr. P. Thomas

According to figures published by theInstitut Politique Congolais, it would appear that receipts from the Congo provinces other than Katanga paid to the Central Government for the first six months of 1962 total about 591 million Congolese francs. Mr. Adoula's Government at present contains twenty Ministers. The United Nations have published no official estimate about the economic recovery of the Congo or of the time needed for the country to attain economic self-sufficiency.
