HC Deb 15 November 1962 vol 667 cc66-7W
46. Mr. Wainwright

asked the Minister of Education if he will give the present number of teachers in the schools in the Dearne Valley constituency area; and if he will state the number of teachers required to ensure that the schools might be fully staffed.

Mr. Chataway

In January, 1962, 130 full-time teachers were employed in maintained primary schools and 90 full-time teachers in maintained secondary schools in the Dearne Valley constituency. The Local Education Authority informs me that in the Dearne District of the Mexborough Educational Division, which largely coincides with the constituency, 2 additional teachers in primary schools and five additional teachers in secondary schools are required to bring the staffing up to the establishment permitted by the Local Education Authority.

51. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Education whether he will make a statement on his campaign to encourage more teachers to return to teaching.

Mr. Chataway

The following information shows the progress made since February, 1961, when the campaign opened to attract qualified married women teachers to return to teaching. In the last 8-month period there has been an increase of 808 or 23 per cent. on the corresponding figures for the same period last year. My right hon.
