HC Deb 13 November 1962 vol 667 cc21-2W
36. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs, in view of the high rents being charged for housing accommodation in the borough of Leyton and elsewhere, what proposals he has for dealing with the housing problem so as to prevent excessive rents for domestic properties.

Sir K. Joseph

If tenants are in danger of being made homeless under threat of exorbitant rents it is open to a local authority to make a compulsory purchase order to protect them. But the only way to solve this problem is to build more houses, and that is the Government's intention.
