HC Deb 13 November 1962 vol 667 c28W
60. Mr. Mason

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) to what extent he has been approached by firms in Barnsley and district for assistance to help them expand; and what advice and financial assistance has been forthcoming;

(2) if he is aware of the growing unemployment problem in Barnsley and district and the urgent need for new industries; and whether he is giving advice and assistance to encourage firms to move into the immediate vicinity.

Mr. D. Price

My right hon. Friend is aware that unemployment in the Barnsley area increased last month, and that the total rate of unemployment, including those temporarily stopped, is now slightly above the national average. But as there are many parts of the country with a much higher rate of unemployment, my right hon. Friend would not be justified in taking special steps to encourage new industry to move into the area. He would however be prepared to see suitable further expansion in Barnsley by firms which are unable to move to areas of higher unemployment. Financial assistance under the Local Employment Act is not available except in development districts.
