HC Deb 12 November 1962 vol 667 c11W
Viscount Lambton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will relax all restrictions on the import of livestock into this country from the continent of Europe.

Mr. Scott-Hopkins

No. There is a general prohibition upon the importation of live ruminating animals and swine from most parts of the world, including the whole of Europe, because of the danger from foot and mouth disease and other animal diseases. We must safeguard the health of our own livestock and we could not contemplate any relaxation which would place them in jeopardy.
