asked the Minister of Labour if he will state the reduction in the number of persons employed in the mining industry of Scotland between 1948 and the latest available date.

Mr. Hare:

I assume the hon. Member is referring to coal mining; between 1948 and 1961 the numbers employed in the industry fell by 8,300. Tribute should be paid to the National Coal Board for their success in finding alternative employment for displaced miners.
