HC Deb 09 May 1962 vol 659 c46W
Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of Transport if he will consult the Lancashire County Council and the county police on the need for the experiment with remotely controlled, illuminated signs to be installed on the Stretford Eccles-Worsley motorway; and if he will have trials made of other forms of lighting simultaneously with the experiment to meet the special circumstances which exist due to a combination of mist, air pollution, and bog-land.

Mr. Marples

No. I am already proposing to carry out an experiment with remotely controlled emergency warning signs on one of the main motorways. The experiment needs a greater length than the 6 miles of the Stretford-Eccles bypass. As I have told the hon. Member in correspondence, any question of lighting this bypass is a matter for the Lancashire County Council as highway authority and the lighting authorities concerned.
