HC Deb 09 May 1962 vol 659 cc46-7W
Mr. Wall

asked the Minister of Transport (1) what steps he is taking to authorise the construction of a by-pass or ring road round Beverley in order to check the growing congestion caused by through-traffic proceeding through the centre of the town;

(2) when a decision will be reached about the construction of an internal relief road in Beverley; what route it will follow; and whether a public inquiry will be held.

Mr. Marples

I can see no prospect of authorising the construction of a bypass or ring road around Beverley in the near future. The East Riding County Council and my Divisional Road Engineer are, however, currently reexamining proposals for an inner relief road. But it is not easy to find a satisfactory solution because of the need to cause as little interference as possible with local amenities and property in this congested town. It is too soon to say whether a public inquiry will be necessary.
