HC Deb 04 July 1962 vol 662 c39W
Mr. Gresham Cooke

asked the Minister of Transport if he will give the estimated ton-mileage of freight worked by the railways and on the road for the year 1961; and if he will state the last year for which the ton-mileages so worked by rail and road were approximately equal.

Mr. Marples

In 1961 British Railways' freight train traffic amounted to 17,600 million ton miles and it is estimated than the ton-mileage worked by road about 50 per cent. more than by rail In 1957 the ton-mileages carried by road and by rail were roughly equal.
