HC Deb 27 February 1962 vol 654 c116W
64. Mr. Jennings

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what progress has been made in the last two years in the large-scale sewage works improvement schemes feeding effluent into the River Tame; and what improvement this has made in the condition of the River Trent at Burton-on-Trent.

Mr. Rippon

Work to the value of £4½ million is in hand or has been completed, and tenders are being invited for further work to the value of £6½ million. It is too early to expect any marked improvement as a result of the work so far completed. But the Trent River Board have noted some improvement in the state of the river at Burton, which they attribute to work done in earlier years and to the progressive reduction in the volume of industrial wastes being discharged direct to the River Tame in the Birmingham area.
