HC Deb 27 February 1962 vol 654 c131W
94. Mr. George Craddock

asked the President of the Board of Trade what recent representations have been made to him by local authorities and other bodies concerning the need for protective legislation for children to enable them to wear non-inflammable night- wear; what replies he has made to these representations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. N. Macpherson

One local authority has suggested to the Board of Trade that the standards of non-inflammability and low-inflammability recognised under the Fabrics (Misdescription) Act should be replaced by a single standard of non-inflammability, and also that standards should be introduced for the testing of made-up garments. The Board recognised the low-inflammability standard for materials in accordance with the advice of an authoritative committee, which I believe to be still valid. As to made-up garments my right hon. Friend is advised that specifying a method of test for them presents great technical difficulties. The local authority was informed accordingly.
