HC Deb 22 February 1962 vol 654 c74W
Mr. Woollam

asked the Secretary to the Treasury what steps have been taken to accept certain land at Lake Windermere in settlement of Estate Duty; and if he will make a statement.

Sir E. Boyle

In 1958 the executors of the late E. A. Curwen, Esq., offered an estate on the western shore of Lake Windermere, with a total area of over 1,000 acres, to the Inland Revenue in part settlement of Estate Duty. This land has now been accepted by the Commissioners of Inland Revenue at a cost to the National Land Fund of £46,000.

That part of the estate, about 600 acres, which is visible from Lake Windermere is to be transferred to the National Trust. This land lies within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park, and is of very great importance to the scenic qualities of the Lake. It represents an important addition to the National Trust's holdings in the Lake District.

The remaining 400 acres are to be transferred to the Forestry Commission.
