HC Deb 15 February 1962 vol 653 c181W
Mr. Wiley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what special steps have been taken to encourage an increase in the number of university places for mathematicians and to bring about an increase in the number of students studying this subject in the next academic year.

Sir E. Boyle

During the five years 1956–57 to 1960–61 the total number of honours degrees obtained in mathematics increased by about 50 per cent. I am aware, and so are the universities, of the importance of further increasing the numbers of graduates in this subject.
