HC Deb 13 February 1962 vol 653 c140W
Mr. Weitzman

asked the Attorney-General if he is aware of the recent publication during the news service of the British Broadcasting Corporation of statements in relation to a criminal trial in progress; and if he will take such steps as will secure that such reports are not given in such a fashion as to arouse any prejudice with regard to the trial.

The Attorney-General

My attention has been drawn by a number of hon. Members to the publication in television broadcasts of statements relating to a criminal trial in progress. It is obviously most desirable that nothing should be published on television or elsewhere which either by way of comment or by emphasis would tend to prejudice a fair trial. I have no evidence which would justify the institution of proceedings for contempt.
