HC Deb 20 December 1962 vol 669 c250W
Mr. Buck

asked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science what research is being undertaken into encephalitis lethargica, commonly known as sleeping sickness, and kindred diseases; and whether he is satisfied that such research is adequate, in view of the fact that there exists at resent no specific form of treatment for sleeping sickness.

Mr. Denzil Freeth

Encephalitis lethargica is now a very rare disease. There are therefore relatively few opportunities for research on its cause. Research on methods of relief of some of the symptoms which may follow an attack, and which may persist for many years, is carried out at a number of hospitals and university departments. This research usually forms part of programmes of work on Parkinson's disease, since the chronic after-effects of encephalitis lethargica are very similar to those of this disease.
