HC Deb 11 December 1962 vol 669 c53W
Mr. McKay

asked the Minister of Education what are the salaries paid for men and women teachers after they have been two years at a teachers training college: what extra amount is paid for a university degree; and what is the average salary of a schoolmaster at a primary school with 200 or 300 scholars.

Sir E. Boyle

Full-time non-graduate qualified teachers with two years of training—whether men or women—are paid on a basic scale £570 to £1,170. This minimum and maximum are increased by £30 for each year of education or training beyond two, by £100 for the possession of a degree and by a further £100 if the degree is of good Honours standard. Additional allowances are also payable to non-graduate and graduate teachers. Including these, the average salary of all full-time qualified men teachers in primary schools on 31st March, 1962, was £1,236. It is not possible to quote an average for teachers in any particular size of school.
