HC Deb 05 December 1962 vol 668 c178W
67. Mr. Willey

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the congestion on the present bridges in Sunderland and of the need to provide public works to relieve unemployment, he will consider the construction of a road bridge over the River Wear just west of Sunderland.

Mr. Marples

I have received no proposals for a new bridge from either the Sunderland Borough Council or the Durham County Council, who are the highway authorities for the area. I have recently approved additional road improvement schemes in Sunderland costing £250,000. Work has already started on some of them.
