Mr. Bradleyasked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science whether he is aware that the Medical Officer of Health for Leicester has reported more than 50 complaints last year about noise from factories; what investigation has been made of this matter by the Committee appointed in April, 1960, to examine the problem of noise and by the National Physical Laboratory; and what has been the result.
§ Mr. Denzil FreethLeicester was one of a number of authorities which provided the Committee on Noise with146W information including information about complaints about noise from factories. The Committee has not yet completed its work. The complaints were not made to my Department, and have not been investigated by the National Physical Laboratory.
§ 35. Mr. Marshasked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science, what provision he is making for research for combating and investigating the effects of noise.
§ Mr. Denzil FreethSuch research forms part of the programmes of the Building Research Station, the National Engineering Laboratory and the National Physical Laboratory. Studies of the effect of noise in industry have been sponsored for some years by the Medical Research Council, which is also undertaking a long term investigation into occupational deafness in conjunction with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The report of the Committee on the Problem of Noise may also be relevant in this context.
