HC Deb 19 April 1962 vol 658 c107W
50. Mr. Fletcher

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has now completed his review of the instructions to the Metropolitan Police regarding the desirability of police doctors being called to give evidence in cases of driving under the influence of drink.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis has now completed his review and has issued fresh instructions in regard to the procedure relating to arrest for driving while under the influence of drink. These involve some changes in the procedure previously in force. On the particular point raised by the hon. Member, the instructions will ensure that the evidence of a police doctor is made available to the court by the prosecution in contested cases, along with evidence from eyewitnesses and, when available, the results of chemical tests showing the amount of alcohol consumed.
