HC Deb 02 April 1962 vol 657 c3W
35. Sir C. Osborne

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance, how many of the 1,000 West Indians who recently arrived in Southampton on the Italian liner "Ascaria" were given National Assistance through the office which was set up specially in the Customs' shed to deal with their claims; how many were given free travel vouchers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The National Assistance Board informs me that travel warrants were provided for twenty West Indians (including nine children) who were unable to pay their fares from Southampton to London and for one to Bristol and one to Birmingham. No assistance was given in cash, or any other form.
