Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Minister of Education (1) how many teachers of mathematics and science subjects in direct grant schools do not possess a university degree;

(2) how many teachers of mathematics and science in maintained secondary schools do not possess a university degree.

The statistics collected by my Department relate to the qualifications which teachers hold and not to the subjects which they teach in school. I am therefore unable to provide the hon. Member with the information for which he asks.

Between 31st March, 1959, and 31st March, 1960, the number of teachers in direct grant grammar schools whose first stated degree subject was mathematics or science increased by 105.
