HC Deb 30 March 1961 vol 637 cc159-60W
Mr. Mason

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty what progress is being made in the construction of the nuclear-propelled submarine "Dreadnought"; how its building programme will compare with the construction of "Nautilus" in two and a quarter years in the United States of America; and what investigations are taking place to see whether the building programmes of nuclear submarines and other naval vessels can be speeded up.

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

Reasonable progress is being made in the construction of H.M.S. "Dreadnought", which was ordered in February, 1957, and the keel of which was laid in June, 1959. It is our constant concern to achieve the earliest possible completion, compatible with economic and other considerations. About half the labour force actually employed in the "Dreadnought" is now working on a three-shift basis.
