HC Deb 30 January 1961 vol 633 c76W
75. Mr. Roy Jenkins

asked the Minister of Pensions and National Insurance by what authority men employed in the motor industry and working short time are treated as five-day week workers for the purpose of entitlement to unemployment benefit, but as six-day week workers for the purpose of payment of such benefit.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter:

The hon. Gentleman has misunderstood the effect of the present law. If what he has in mind is that a man on short time is not entitled to claim unemployment benefit in respect of a day on which he would not in any event be working, the answer is Section 4 (1) of the National Insurance Act, 1957.
