§ 86. Mr. P. Browneasked the Minister of Education what directives he has issued to local education authorities regarding the maximum permissible daily travelling time for primary and secondary modern school children; and what these time limits are.
§ Sir D. Eccles:I have told local education authorities that in general I would not normally expect primary children to spend more than three-quarters of an hour in getting to school and secondary children more than one-and-a-quarter hours. This advice cannot be binding on local education authorities since much must depend on local circumstances, and in particular whether there is another school within easier reach.
