HC Deb 17 February 1961 vol 634 c170W
86. Mr. P. Browne

asked the Minister of Education what directives he has issued to local education authorities regarding the maximum permissible daily travelling time for primary and secondary modern school children; and what these time limits are.

Sir D. Eccles:

I have told local education authorities that in general I would not normally expect primary children to spend more than three-quarters of an hour in getting to school and secondary children more than one-and-a-quarter hours. This advice cannot be binding on local education authorities since much must depend on local circumstances, and in particular whether there is another school within easier reach.
