HC Deb 17 February 1961 vol 634 cc169-70W
87. Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Education if he is now able to state the number of secondary modern pupils entered for the General Certificate of Education examination in 1960, the number and proportion of secondary modern schools entering candidates, the average number of subjects taken, and the average number of passes gained, respectively; and how these figures compare with those for 1959.

Sir D. Eccles:

The following is the Answer. The figures are based on a 10 per cent. sample analysis.

General Certificate of Education Examination 1959 1960
Candidates from secondary modern schools 15,580 21,670
Secondary modern schools submitting candidates:
number of schools 969 1,254
percentage of schools 25 33
Average number of subjects per candidate from secondary modern schools:—
Taken 3.9 3.9
Passed 1.9 1.9

Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Education if he will state the number of secondary modern pupils in Staffordshire who sat for the General Certificate of Education examination in 1960, the average number of subjects taken, and the average number of passes gained.

Sir D. Eccles:

292 secondary modern pupils in Staffordshire sat for the General Certificate of Education examination in 1960. Of these, 282 attempted Ordinary level only, 5 Advanced level and 5 both levels for different subjects. The candidates at Ordinary level on average took 4. 3 subjects each and passed in 2. 2 subjects. The candidates at Advanced level on average took 1. 5 subjects each and passed in 1. 0.

Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Education if he will now publish an analysis of the General Certificate of Education results of secondary modern pupils in 1960, giving details of the numbers of subjects taken and of passes gained.

Sir D. Eccles:

From a 10 per cent sample analysis it can be estimated that, in 1960, 21,670 candidates from secondary modern schools entered for the General Certificate of Education examination. These candidates made a total of 85,050 subject entries and passed in 41,060.

A detailed analysis from the same sample, of pupils classified by entries and passes, will probably be completed by the end of this month, and I will send it to the hon. Member.
