HC Deb 14 February 1961 vol 634 cc133-4W
74. Mr. C. Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, what is the present rate of unemployment in St. Helena; what steps are being taken to relieve it; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Iain Macleod:

The present number of unemployed is 212, which includes 103 men recently returned from Ascension Island. Efforts are being made to re-absorb as many as possible in work being carried out on agriculture, irrigation, improvement of roads and other public works under the Colony's Development Programme. Some jobs are also found for St. Helenians in hotels in the United Kingdom.
