HC Deb 05 December 1961 vol 650 cc145-6W
65. Mr. Albu

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware of the growing anxiety in the universities about the inadequacy of the funds available for research; and what steps he is taking to remedy this.

Sir E. Boyle

I am aware of the importance attached to research in the universities. Their requirements for this purpose will be taken into account by the University Grants Committee in their recommendations for recurrent grant to the universities which they will shortly be making to me. I would also draw the hon. Member's attention to the estimated figures for grants to universities by the Research Councils given by my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary for Science on 28th November last which show substantial increases.
