HC Deb 26 April 1961 vol 639 c42W
54. Mr. Callaghan

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty what proposals he has for allocating Admiralty vessels needing refit to Cardiff and Barry in the near future.

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

We have no proposals at present for allocating Admiralty vessels for refit to Cardiff and Barry. Our procedure is to invite competitive tenders for work of this kind, if we are unable to arrange for it to be carried out in one of the Royal Dockyards. Two Cardiff firms were recently included in an invitation to tender for the refit of two Royal Fleet Auxiliaries. They were unsuccessful in one case; the tenders for the other ship closed last night. It is likely that there will be other opportunities in the next few months.
