HC Deb 17 April 1961 vol 638 cc75-6W
Dr. A. Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether, in view of the abnormally high incidence of lung cancer in Scotland, he will consult with local health authorities with a view to recommending a ban on smoking in places of local entertainment.

Mr. Maclay

I have drawn the attention of local authorities to the risks associated with smoking. Some authorities have made byelaws, which have received the confirmation of the Secretary of State, to ban smoking in place of public entertainment and powers to make such byelaws are available to other authorities.
