HC Deb 14 November 1960 vol 630 c7W
63. Mr. Kelley

asked the Minister of Labour what labour requirements have been notified to him in respect of the Number 2 Area, North Eastern Divisional Coal Board, on the latest convenient date; how long there has been a labour deficiency in this area; and what steps are being taken to improve the situation.

Mr. Hare

Vacancies for 1,194 workers in coal mining were outstanding on 5th November in local offices of my Department in the No. 2 Area of the North Eastern Divisional Coal Board. Shortages of some types of labour in the area have persisted for some time. My local officers are doing all they can to fill the vacancies from labour available locally and have circulated them to other regions. I understand that the Board is also conducting an intensive recruiting drive in the area.
