HC Deb 09 November 1960 vol 629 c55W
83. Mr. G. M. Thomson

asked the Minister of Labour if he will make a statement on the latest unemployment situation in Dundee, with particular reference to the jute industry and the refrigerator industry.

Mr. Hare

On 10th October, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 2,809 workers registered as unemployed in Dundee, and in the Dundee and Broughty Ferry area as a whole 2,908, representing a percentage rate of 3.3. There is a small amount of redundancy and short time working in the jute industry in Dundee which may increase. I am informed that a refrigerator firm in Dundee will also be introducing short time working in the near future.
