HC Deb 02 May 1960 vol 622 c35W
57. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the date and main terms of agreement or treaty with the Government of Venezuela for the demarcation of boundaries between British Guiana and Venezuela.

Mr. Profumo

The Treaty, known as the Pauncefote-Andrade Treaty, was concluded between Great Britain and Venezuela on 2nd February, 1897. It provided for the dispute regarding the western boundary of British Guiana to be submitted to arbitration. Under Article II of the Treaty two United States and two United Kingdom judges were appointed to constitute the arbitral tribunal, under the presidency of a distinguished Russian jurist. By Article XIII of the Treaty both Governments were pledged to accept the Tribunal's award as "a full, perfect and final settlement".
