HC Deb 02 May 1960 vol 622 cc35-6W
53. Mr. Mayhew

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to what extent British Broadcasting Corporation broadcasts to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, to other Communist countries, and to non-Communist countries adjacent to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, are still being jammed by the Soviet Government.

Mr. Profumo

The systematic jamming of British Broadcasting Corporation programmes in Russian ceased on 3rd February. Irregular jamming still occurs for about 5 per cent. of the total programme time. This appears to be irrespective of content.

British Broadcasting Corporation transmissions in Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Roumanian and German are being jammed by the countries concerned and also apparently from the territory of the Soviet Union. British Broadcasting Corporation transmissions in Mandarin and Cantonese are jammed by China. British Broadcasting Corporation Polish and Albanian Services are subject to some jamming from neighbouring Communist territory.

Broadcasts to non-Communist countries adjacent to the Soviet Union are generally unjammed although there is occasional interference from Soviet and satellite jammers.
