HC Deb 29 June 1960 vol 625 cc136-8W
Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what assistance Great Britain is providing towards developing educational and medical services in the Trucial Coast States.

Mr. R. Allan

Under the Trucial States Development Scheme, which is in its fifth year of operation, Her Majesty's Government are planning to spend this year over £37,000 on education, compared with about £17,000 spent last year, and more than £25,000 on public health, compared with about £9,000 spent last year.

Her Majesty's Government have built schools in Sharjah and Abu Dhabi and, in addition, run a Trade School in Sharjah and an Agricultural School in Ras al Khaimah. The Trucial Oman Scouts also run a small school. Teacher-training courses are arranged in Bahrain for candidates from the Trucial States. Her Majesty's Government pay travelling accommodation and living expenses of the pupils.

Her Majesty's Government have considerably increased the capacity of the Al Maktum hospital in Dubai which is under the charge of a British doctor. Efforts are now being made to recruit another British doctor for the area. They have also built nine dispensaries, staffed by trained dispensers, in six of the Trucial States, and a dispensary is to be built in the seventh State. They are undertaking anti-malarial work.
