HC Deb 29 June 1960 vol 625 cc130-1W
Mr. E. Johnson

asked the Minister of Transport how soon he expects to have completed his consultations with other European countries in regard to a standard type of traffic direction indicator signal; and if, when these consultations have been completed, he will make the fitting of such signals compulsory on all motor vehicles using the roads.

Mr. Marples

Good progress has been made in the international discussions. I am in touch with the manufacturers and other interests concerned about the application in this country of standards which compare closely with the international recommendations. I do not propose at this stage to make the fitting of direction indicators compulsory. Indicators which are fitted after new regulations are made, however, will, of course, have to comply with the appropriate requirements.
