Mr. Doddsasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, in view of the increasing number of ice-cream vendors using chimes to attract custom, what limitations are imposed under his regulations in respect of noise and frequency of chimes; what directives have been given to local authorities on the matter; and how many prosecutions have been instituted in the Metropolitan Police area since 1st January, 1959.

ButlerI have no power to make regulations or to give directives to local authorities on this subject, and I regret that I have no information about prosecutions in respect of ice-cream vendors' chimes. But I can tell the hon. Member that many local authorities have made byelaws making it an offence to operate an amplifier in a street so as to cause a nuisance.
