HC Deb 15 February 1960 vol 617 cc84-5W
76. Mr. Marshall

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty if he will give details of the expenditure incurred in providing protection, additional to the normal requirements, for British fishing vessels in Icelandic waters since 1st September, 1958.

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

The main identifiable additional cost of protecting British fishing vessels off Iceland has been in extra expenditure on fuel. Some additional expense has also been incurred in maintaining a replenishment tanker continuously in the area. In the period of seventeen months from 1st September, 1958, when the fishery dispute with Iceland began, to 31st January, 1960, the total additional expenditure under these headings was approximately £½ million.
