HC Deb 04 February 1960 vol 616 cc160-1W
56. Mr, Hector Hughes

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state his present plans for attracting new industries and for expanding existing industries in and about the City of Aberdeen.

Mr. J. Rodgers

The Board of Trade endeavours to persuade suitable industrialists to go to Aberdeen.

57. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will make a statement on the effect which he estimates British participation in the Outer Seven arrangements will have on the paper-making industry and the pig and bacon industries in Aberdeen, and the other relevant industries connected therewith.

Mr. Erroll

The paper industry in Scotland is likely to face increased competition, but I think that the possible effects on this industry, and on those serving it, can be exaggerated. The removal of the tariff will, in any case, be spread over a number of years. As regards the pig and bacon industries. I would refer the hon. and learned Member to the Written Answer given by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on 27th July, 1959, and to his speech in the debate on 21st July.
