HC Deb 21 December 1960 vol 632 c164W
63. Mr. Brockway

asked the Lord Privy Seal what resolutions on Algeria came before the General Assembly of the United Nations; which were accepted and rejected; for which resolutions the British delegate voted; and which delegates voted in favour and against each, respectively, and which abstained.

Mr. Godber

The resolution to which my right hon. Friend referred in the House on 19th December was voted on in the plenary session of the General Assembly on 19th December. Certain amendments were proposed, but were not adopted. The paragraph in the resolution which called on the United Nations to conduct a referendum in Algeria failed even to obtain a simple majority. The resolution, with this paragraph excluded, was then put to the vote and adopted by 63 votes to 8 with 27 abstentions. The United Kingdom delegate abstained. The United Nations document showing how delegates voted will be placed in the Library as soon as possible.
