HC Deb 14 April 1960 vol 621 cc177-8W
Sir H. D'Avigdor-Goldsmid

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, in view of the traditional friendship between the United Kingdom and Nepal, what aid Her Majesty's Government are giving to Nepal.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

Nepal is a country with which the British Crown has had an extremely long, honourable and cordial association. As my hon. Friend will be aware, Nepal has been receiving a certain amount of technical assistance from the United Kingdom under the Colombo Plan. Her needs however go considerably beyond what she has been receiving hitherto. I am glad to say that agreement has been reached with the Nepalese Government for Her Majesty's Government to provide a programme of economic aid for Nepal to the value of £1 million, which Her Majesty's Government expect to be committed over five years. As the first instalment of this programme, Parliament is being asked to approve provision in the main Estimates of the Foreign Office Grants and Services Vote for the expenditure in 1960–61 of £160,000 on the provision of diesel generating sets, hydroelectric equipment, road works, vehicles and other items.
