HC Deb 14 April 1960 vol 621 cc149-50W
Mr. Brockway

asked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations what wages are paid to labourers in the Public Works Departments of Bechuanaland, Basutoland and Swaziland, respectively.

Mr. Alport

In Basutoland the average daily wages paid to labourers in the Public Works Department are 4s. 3d. for unskilled workers, 9s. for semi-skilled workers and 15s. for skilled workers. A Committee is now reviewing the conditions of service of men in all these categories.

In the Bechuanaland Protectorate the minimum daily wage for casual labourers and semi-skilled men employed by the Public Works Department is 2s. 6d. and the maximum 50s. Labourers on the permanent staff are on the salary scale £84 x 12 — 132 x 18 — 150. Daily wage figures are under review.

In Swaziland the wages paid to labourers in the Public Works Department range from 3s. for youths to 10s. plus in each case rations worth 5s. per week.
