Mr. Brockway

asked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations what percentage of children of school age is provided with education in Bechuanaland, Basutoland and Swaziland, respectively.

Mr. Alport

It is estimated that in Basutoland 80 per cent. of children of lower primary school age attend school. In the Bechuanaland Protectorate 50 per cent., and in Swaziland 54 per cent.

Mr. Brockway

asked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations what percentage of children between the ages of 12 and 15 years is provided with secondary education in Bechuanaland, Basutoland and Swaziland, respectively.

In Basutoland and the Bechuanaland Protectorate children are usually over the age of 15 when admitted to secondary schools.

In Swaziland 3.3 per cent. of children between the ages of 12 and 15 are in the secondary division.
